  1. Personalized Gift Giving

Tell us about who you’re shopping for, and we’ll show you hand-picked things they’ll love.

Our Gift Finder is intended to make you feel like you’re being guided through a curated boutique. Like a knowledgeable salesperson in a brick and mortar store, we gather information about who you’re shopping for and what they’re into, and we use that to suggest a selection of products just for them.

    Canopy Gift Finder

We’ve taken the time to curate results for every combination of relationship, personality, and interest. We’re not simply running an algorithm—we’ve carefully considered what will make the best gifts for everyone in your life.

We think this is the most human approach to online gift recommendations, and we can’t wait to share it with you.

Give it a try. We think you’ll like it.

If you have feedback or ideas about how we could improve our Gift Finder, please send us an email to hello@canopy.co or tweet us @JoinCanopy. We love hearing from you.

  2. Making Canopy more personal

We’re often asked how Canopy is curated, and why certain products appear in our feeds. To shed some light on this, we’ve updated the home page to explain why products are showing up.

For logged in users, your home page now showcases a feed of products from people, brands, and categories you follow, combined with what’s trending on Canopy. (Logged out stays as just trending products).

For example: if someone you follow likes a product, it’ll show up in your feed right away and indicate it was liked by that person. If a new product is added to a brand you follow, it’ll say so, right on the product card.

    New, personalized feed

In addition to increasing transparency, we wanted to give attribution to the Canopy community. We think you deserve credit for helping to make the Internet’s most beautiful catalog.

This change is live on Web and we’re working on bringing it to iOS in the coming weeks. We’ll also be adding new features to help you find and follow great users, brands, and categories.

Do you have ideas for personalization or community features? Leave a comment below or tweet us @JoinCanopy. We’d love to hear from you.

  3. Featured is now better organized, and easily shareable.

Last September we launched Featured—a curated homepage to showcase our favorite collections, brands, and products. Today, we released some changes to make it easier to navigate.

    Canopy Featured Page

Previously, it was tough to find past content on Featured because it was presented as a long, paginated stream.

Now, we’ve grouped each page into an “issue" and added an index for all issues at canopy.co/featured. Additionally, every Featured issue now has a stable permalink, so they’re easier to share or come back to.

We also decided to make Explore our homepage again, instead of Featured. After launching the iOS app, we realized how nice it was to have a homepage that’s constantly updating with new and trending products. So we’re back to how we started, with Explore as Canopy’s home.

    Issue 23, Curated by YACHT

This week’s issue was put together by Jona Benchtolt and Claire L. Evans from the band YACHT. Their distinctive taste has made for some interesting collections filled with unusual products. Check it out.

We’d love to know what you think about these updates. Reach out to us with any questions or feedback by sending an email to hello@canopy.co or tweeting @JoinCanopy.

  4. Filter by Prime Availability

Take advantage of your Prime subscription.

If you have an Amazon Prime subscription, you’ll love our new Prime filter. This filter can be found in the top right-hand corner of Explore and within our Shop on the web. When selected, only products available with Amazon Prime will be displayed. You’ll also see a Prime indicator in the price button on product pages. We hope this makes it easier to find those last-minute gifts.

Canopy details page with Prime In our iOS app, you’ll see the Prime indicator on product pages, but the filter is yet to come. It will be included in an update soon.

Not familiar with Prime? Here’s more information.

As always, please reach out with any questions, concerns or feedback by sending an email to hello@canopy.co or tweeting @JoinCanopy.

  5. Our Shop page, reorganized.

An easier way to find specific things.

Our Shop is where we organize products by categories, gifts and brands. This makes finding something specific, like sunglasses, gifts for mom, or Aesop products, fast and easy. Previously, we presented each of these groups in a list, which required quite a bit of scrolling. We’re now showing categories, gifts, and brands in a grid—just like on our iOS App. This new layout allows you to see more, by doing less:

    Canopy's Shop

We’ll continue to make updates to improve your shopping experience. If you have feedback or ideas for other improvements, send us an email at hello@canopy.co or tweet us @JoinCanopy. We’d love to hear from you.

  6. Canopy for iOS is here and shopping has never been so beautiful.

Discover and collect incredible products from your iPhone.

Since our launch, we’ve had numerous requests for an app. Today, we’re excited to say that it’s finally ready.

Download the app to shop our curated categories, discover great brands, and find gifts for the people you love. If you see something you like, save it for later. Everything on the app will be synced to your account on Canopy.co.

With our first release for iOS, we’re really just scratching the surface of what we can do. We’ll quickly be adding more functionality, like a Featured page, following, and full optimization for iPad.

We’re excited to hear what you think.

  7. Profiles just got more personal

You can now add a description about yourself, site URL, and filter by Finds.

Canopy has a very special community—full of creative, talented and interesting people. We’re hoping to highlight the incredible backgrounds of our users, and make it easier to discover people with similar taste.

We encourage everyone to express themselves in greater detail on their profiles, using a personal description and URL.

Also, we’ve added a tab that allows you to see the products you’ve contributed to Canopy. “Finds” is located between “Likes” and “Collections” on profile pages.

Here’s an example of what your profile could look like:

We’d love to hear what you think. Write a comment on this post, send us an email at hello@canopy.co, or tweet us @JoinCanopy.

  8. “Something you found has been added to our catalog”

We’ll let you know when a product you found has been selected by the Editor.

Anyone can add products to Canopy. We filter through those products and categorize the ones that align with our standards for design, quality, and functionality. Part of this process involves retouching product photos, adjusting titles, and adding editor’s notes.

If we select a product you found, you’ll receive a notification with the category you contributed to and the product that was added. It will show up in New, searches, and be discoverable in Shop.

Products we don’t select will continue to exist on Canopy and show up in your profile, and will still be visible to your followers.

With the help of our community and a touch of curation, we’re able to create an exceptional and unique catalog of products. Continue adding the things you love and help make Canopy the best place to discover products on the Internet.

  9. Introducing “Featured”—the newest way to enjoy Canopy

Today we launched a highly curated homepage to showcase collections, brands, and products we love.

We created Featured because we wanted a place on Canopy that’s more structured and editorial. With Featured, we’ll thoughtfully arrange products in a format that is clear, unique, and beautiful. Think of Featured as an opinionated selection of the Canopy catalog.

We’ll include our favorite products—along with some editor’s notes.

We’ll share the brands we love, and that you should know about.

We’ll display helpful collections each season, making it easier for you to find the stuff you’re after.

Our plan is to add new content regularly, so keep checking back. And while Explore won’t be the first page you see when you visit Canopy, it will continue to show trending products as always.

If you have questions, additional feedback or are interested in partnering, send us an email at hello@canopy.co or tweet us @JoinCanopy.

  10. A simpler, more familiar action

You’ll notice a small but significant change on Canopy today; the primary action on products is now Like, instead of Recommend. Here’s why we changed it.

One of Canopy’s goals is to help people make better buying decisions, in less time, with less stress. So, we built a signal to surface the best products. We called this signal Recommend because we wanted to allude to the power of a recommendation from a friend. On Canopy, you can be confident that the products with lots of recommendations from our community will be great.

To our team, recommending a product represented by an A-OK gesture, meant that you supported this thing in some way. We intentionally didn’t make any rules or requirements; you could recommend a product you own, thought was cool, or simply wanted to buy. All recommendations were welcome.

That intention, however, didn’t translate very well. There was a disconnect between our loosely defined signal and how it was actually being used. So, we reached out to our users and asked them to describe what recommend means to them. We learned that many people were afraid to recommend products they didn’t personally own—they felt that doing so would be dishonest, or they were hesitant to recommend anything because they perceived it as such a significant action.

Because the word recommend has a very specific meaning, it didn’t work well for a signal we intended to be flexible. The word Recommend was preventing interactions with Canopy and creating friction for our users. We scared people away from showing their appreciation for the products they thought were beautiful.

We created an action too strong for it’s own good, so something needed to be changed.

We needed a softer and more approachable signal; something anyone could be comfortable with. So, we renamed Recommend to Like, and we changed the A-OK icon to a simple heart.

Starting today, you’ll see a heart icon on every item on Canopy. When you like a product, the heart turns from grey to red. Liking products still helps to surface great stuff, but now there’s less confusion about what the signal actually means.

Whether you find something you like, love, or want to save for later, just click the heart.

If you have questions or additional feedback, send us an email at hello@canopy.co or tweet us @JoinCanopy.
